Lead Pouring Ritual — Traditional Evil Eye Removal

What Is Lead Pouring (Kurşun Döktürme)?

Lead pouring (kurşun döktürme) is an ancient evil eye removal ritual practiced in Anatolia for centuries. Molten lead is poured into a bowl of cold water held over the affected person's head. The shapes the lead takes upon contact with water reveal information about the source and severity of the evil eye. This ritual is typically performed by experienced women known as "kurşuncu." Specific prayers and the Basmala are recited during the process. Lead pouring is considered both a physical and spiritual purification — people report feeling lightness and peace after the ritual.

Meanings of Lead Shapes

Each shape that forms during lead pouring carries a distinct meaning. Eye shape: indicates a strong evil eye from intense jealousy. Spikes or sharp points: evil eye from multiple sources. Smooth, flat shape: mild evil eye, easily resolved. Human figure: the evil eye comes from a specific individual. Teardrop shape: evil eye rooted in sorrow or envy. Snake shape: gossip and ill intent. The experienced kurşuncu woman reads these shapes to identify the source and recommends appropriate protection measures.

How to Perform the Ritual

Materials: piece of lead, metal ladle, wide-mouthed bowl, and cold water. The person sits on a stool. The water bowl is held over their head. The lead is melted on a stove and poured into the water while reciting Basmala and prayers. The process is repeated three times. The shape of the lead is examined after each pour. After the ritual, the water is poured at the base of a plant — never brought back inside the home. Important warning: melting lead can be hazardous and should only be done by an experienced practitioner. Lead fumes are toxic — work in a well-ventilated area.
