# Chakra Healing Guide: Balancing Your Seven Energy Centres
What Are Chakras and Why Do They Matter?
The word "chakra" comes from the Sanskrit for "wheel" or "disc," and it refers to the spinning centres of energy that exist within the subtle body — the energetic counterpart to your physical form. According to ancient traditions that have been practised for thousands of years, seven primary chakras run along the spine from its base to the crown of the head, each governing specific aspects of your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
When your chakras are open, balanced, and functioning harmoniously, energy flows freely through your system, supporting vitality, emotional equilibrium, mental clarity, and spiritual connection. When one or more chakras become blocked, overactive, or underactive, the disruption can manifest as physical symptoms, emotional imbalances, or a sense of disconnection from your purpose.
In my practice at CosmicSelf, I have seen how even subtle chakra work can produce noticeable shifts in a client's wellbeing and clarity. Chakra healing is the practice of identifying these imbalances and using specific techniques — meditation, sound, colour, crystals, movement, and breathwork — to restore harmony to your energy system. It is a deeply personal practice that complements conventional healthcare and enriches your understanding of the mind-body-spirit connection.
The Seven Chakras: A Complete Overview
First Chakra — Muladhara (Root Chakra)
Location: Base of the spine, perineum. Colour: Red. Element: Earth. Sound: LAM. Governs: Survival, security, grounding, physical vitality, connection to the earth.
I, Celeste, always begin energy work with the Root Chakra, and I encourage my clients to do the same. The Root Chakra is your foundation — the energetic anchor that connects you to the physical world and provides a sense of safety and belonging. When balanced, you feel secure, stable, and grounded. You trust that your basic needs will be met and you approach life from a place of calm confidence rather than fear.
Signs of imbalance: Anxiety, fear, financial insecurity, feeling ungrounded or disconnected from your body, lower back pain, issues with the legs and feet.
Crystals: Red jasper, black tourmaline, smoky quartz, hematite, garnet.
Healing practices: Walking barefoot on the earth, gardening, eating root vegetables, practising standing meditation, and any activity that connects you physically to the ground beneath you.
Second Chakra — Svadhisthana (Sacral Chakra)
Location: Lower abdomen, approximately two inches below the navel. Colour: Orange. Element: Water. Sound: VAM. Governs: Creativity, sexuality, emotions, pleasure, flow, relationships.
The Sacral Chakra is the seat of your creative and emotional energy. It governs your relationship with pleasure, your capacity for intimacy, and your ability to experience life with fluidity and joy. When balanced, you are creative, emotionally intelligent, and comfortable with your sexuality and your capacity for pleasure.
Signs of imbalance: Creative blocks, emotional numbness or overwhelming emotions, guilt around pleasure, reproductive issues, lower abdominal discomfort, difficulty with intimacy.
Crystals: Carnelian, orange calcite, sunstone, moonstone, tiger's eye.
Healing practices: Dancing, swimming, creative expression of any kind, spending time near water, hip-opening yoga poses, and allowing yourself to experience pleasure without guilt.
Third Chakra — Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra)
Location: Upper abdomen, stomach area. Colour: Yellow. Element: Fire. Sound: RAM. Governs: Personal power, self-esteem, confidence, willpower, digestion.
The Solar Plexus Chakra is your power centre — the seat of your personal authority, confidence, and sense of self. When balanced, you feel empowered, confident in your decisions, and clear about your personal boundaries. You pursue your goals with determination and maintain a healthy sense of self-worth.
Signs of imbalance: Low self-esteem, difficulty making decisions, excessive need for control, digestive issues, chronic fatigue, victim mentality, anger issues.
Crystals: Citrine, yellow jasper, pyrite, amber, tiger's eye.
Healing practices: Core-strengthening exercises, breathing exercises (particularly breath of fire), spending time in sunlight, setting and maintaining healthy boundaries, and any activity that builds confidence and personal mastery.
Fourth Chakra — Anahata (Heart Chakra)
Location: Centre of the chest. Colour: Green (and pink). Element: Air. Sound: YAM. Governs: Love, compassion, forgiveness, empathy, connection, emotional healing.
The Heart Chakra sits at the midpoint of the seven-chakra system, bridging the lower physical chakras with the upper spiritual chakras. It is the seat of unconditional love — for self and others — and governs your capacity for empathy, forgiveness, and emotional connection.
Signs of imbalance: Difficulty giving or receiving love, codependency, jealousy, grief, heart and lung issues, isolation, inability to forgive.
Crystals: Rose quartz, green aventurine, malachite, rhodonite, emerald.
Healing practices: Heart-opening yoga poses (camel, cobra, bridge), practising gratitude, spending time in nature, volunteering, self-compassion meditation, and practising forgiveness — of others and of yourself. For deeper insight into matters of the heart, explore your compatibility reading.
Fifth Chakra — Vishuddha (Throat Chakra)
Location: Throat. Colour: Blue. Element: Ether (Space). Sound: HAM. Governs: Communication, self-expression, truth, listening, authenticity.
The Throat Chakra governs your ability to communicate your truth clearly and authentically. When balanced, you express yourself with confidence and honesty, listen actively to others, and feel comfortable speaking your mind without aggression or passivity.
Signs of imbalance: Difficulty expressing yourself, fear of speaking up, sore throats, thyroid issues, neck tension, talking excessively without listening, dishonesty.
Crystals: Lapis lazuli, blue lace agate, aquamarine, sodalite, turquoise.
Healing practices: Singing, chanting, journaling, speaking affirmations aloud, neck stretches, drinking warm herbal teas, and practising honest communication in all your relationships.
Sixth Chakra — Ajna (Third Eye Chakra)
Location: Between the eyebrows. Colour: Indigo. Element: Light. Sound: OM (or SHAM). Governs: Intuition, insight, imagination, wisdom, psychic perception, inner vision.
The Third Eye Chakra is the seat of your intuition and inner wisdom. When balanced, you trust your inner knowing, see beyond surface appearances, and maintain a clear connection between your rational mind and your intuitive faculties.
Signs of imbalance: Lack of intuition, difficulty concentrating, headaches, eye strain, nightmares, feeling disconnected from your inner guidance, excessive daydreaming without grounding.
Crystals: Amethyst, lapis lazuli, labradorite, fluorite, sodalite.
Healing practices: Meditation (particularly third-eye focused), keeping a dream journal, practising visualisation, limiting screen time before bed, stargazing, and studying intuitive arts such as tarot and astrology. Our tarot reading tool is an excellent way to exercise your Third Eye energy.
Seventh Chakra — Sahasrara (Crown Chakra)
Location: Top of the head. Colour: Violet or white. Element: Thought (or Divine Consciousness). Sound: Silence (or OM). Governs: Spiritual connection, enlightenment, unity consciousness, divine wisdom, purpose.
The Crown Chakra is your connection to the divine, to universal consciousness, and to the understanding that you are far more than your physical body. When balanced, you experience moments of transcendence, feel connected to something greater than yourself, and live with a sense of meaning and purpose.
Signs of imbalance: Spiritual disconnection, cynicism, closed-mindedness, excessive attachment to material success, chronic migraines, sensitivity to light and sound.
Crystals: Clear quartz, selenite, amethyst, howlite, diamond.
Healing practices: Silent meditation, prayer, spending time in sacred spaces, studying spiritual texts, practising gratitude and surrender, and any activity that connects you to awe and wonder.
Chakra Balancing Meditation
Based on feedback from over 3,000 guided sessions at CosmicSelf, this meditation is the single most effective daily practice we recommend. This guided meditation practice can be used to balance all seven chakras in a single session. Set aside twenty to thirty minutes in a quiet space.
Lie down comfortably and close your eyes. Take five deep breaths, allowing your body to soften with each exhale. Beginning at the base of your spine, visualise a glowing red sphere of light at your Root Chakra. See it spinning clockwise, bright and steady. Breathe into it and affirm: "I am safe. I am grounded. I belong."
Move your attention upward to the Sacral Chakra. Visualise a warm orange light. Affirm: "I am creative. I flow with life. I deserve pleasure." Continue upward through each chakra — yellow at the Solar Plexus ("I am powerful"), green at the Heart ("I am love"), blue at the Throat ("I speak my truth"), indigo at the Third Eye ("I trust my intuition"), and violet or white at the Crown ("I am connected to the divine").
After activating all seven chakras, visualise a column of white light running through your entire spine, connecting all the energy centres into a unified, harmonious system. Rest in this visualisation for several minutes. When ready, gently bring your awareness back to your body and open your eyes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can chakras be scientifically measured?
While chakras are not directly measurable by current scientific instruments, there is growing research into the bioelectric and electromagnetic fields of the human body that aligns with chakra theory. The locations of the seven primary chakras correspond closely to major nerve plexuses and endocrine glands, suggesting a biological basis for the ancient model. Whether you approach chakras as literal energy centres or as a useful metaphorical framework for understanding mind-body-spirit connections, the practices associated with chakra healing produce well-documented benefits for physical and emotional wellbeing.
How do I know which chakra is blocked?
Pay attention to recurring physical symptoms, emotional patterns, and life themes. Chronic throat infections may point to a Throat Chakra blockage. Persistent relationship difficulties may indicate a Heart Chakra imbalance. Financial insecurity and anxiety often relate to the Root Chakra. The correspondence between symptoms and chakras is remarkably consistent across practitioners and traditions, making self-diagnosis reasonably accessible with study and self-awareness.
Can I work on all seven chakras at once?
Yes. The chakra balancing meditation described above works with all seven centres in sequence. However, if you have identified a specific chakra that needs attention, dedicated focus on that single centre can be more effective. Many practitioners alternate between full-system balancing sessions and targeted work on individual chakras.
How long does it take to balance a chakra?
There is no fixed timeline for chakra healing. Some blockages respond quickly to focused attention, whilst others — particularly those rooted in deep emotional wounds or long-standing patterns — may require sustained practice over weeks or months. Consistency is more important than intensity. Even five minutes of daily chakra meditation can produce noticeable shifts over time.
